The second edition of "Car-Free Sunday," implemented by Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, was held with strong public participation, this time along Ziya Gökalp Boulevard, Örme Street, and Atatürk Boulevard.Mayor of Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Ayşe Ünlüce also joined residents on Atatürk Boulevard, accompanying citizens as they enjoyed a day free from motor traffic as part of the Car-Free Sunday initiative.
Despite the cold weather, the event attracted strong interest from residents of Eskişehir, as streets and boulevards were freed from traffic noise for a day, replaced by laughter, conversation, and the joy of children. City residents rediscovered public spaces by walking, cycling, and greeting their neighbors, enjoying a different rhythm of urban life.
Streets that temporarily transformed into safe play areas for children offered colorful scenes throughout the day. While families spent time together in a secure environment, street musicians and various activities added vibrancy to the atmosphere. Even if only for one day, this special experience--placing people and everyday life at the center instead of vehicles--once again highlighted the city's culture of sharing and solidarity.
The initiative aims to reduce the use of private vehicles, lower the carbon footprint, and prevent air and noise pollution. It also seeks to encourage public transport and alternative modes of mobility, while transforming public spaces into more active and social areas.
As part of the event, Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce met with residents along Atatürk Boulevard. Spending time speaking with citizens and engaging closely with children, Mayor Ünlüce shared warm moments and took commemorative photos. Residents expressed their satisfaction with the initiative during the friendly and welcoming gathering.
Commenting on the event, Mayor Ünlüce said: "Despite the cold weather, the strong participation of our residents reminded us once again of the true sound of our streets--walking, talking, and sharing. With streets enlivened by the joy of our children, we experienced together, even if only for one day, an urban life that places people and everyday living at its center rather than vehicles. We will continue to take these steps with determination to make Eskişehir a more livable, healthier, and more sharing-oriented city. I would like to thank all our residents who took part."
During the implementation, alternative transportation routes were planned, and municipal teams were deployed on the ground to ensure uninterrupted access for emergency services, people with disabilities, and essential services. Car-Free Sunday events will continue to be held regularly on the last Sunday of each month.
